Oxbryta Lawsuits for Individuals Diagnosed with Vaso-Occlusive Crisis

What’s happening with Oxbryta?

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) medication Oxbryta has been linked to a serious condition known as a Vaso-Occlusive Crisis, sometimes called “sickle cell crisis” or “Pain Crises”, and can cause kidney failure, organ failure, stroke, or death from these injuries. The FDA has stated that the benefits of Oxbryta do not appear to outweigh the risks.

If you or a loved one were diagnosed with Vaso-Occlusive Crisis (VOC), Organ Failure, Kidney Failure, Stroke, or Death after taking the Sickle Cell Disease treatment Oxbryta, you may be eligible for significant compensation from Pfizer due to their failure to warn patients and doctors about these risks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that the risks of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) medication Oxbryta may outweigh the benefits.

Pharmaceutical manufacturer Pfizer has issued a recall of all lots of Oxbryta (voxelotor).

Due to Statute of Limitations which vary by state and location, it is important that anyone who may qualify to file a claim does so as quickly as possible so they do not lose their right to file a claim.

Who qualifies to file a claim?

Individuals with Sickle Cell Disease who took Oxbryta and were diagnosed with any of the following side effects or injuries:

  • Vaso-Occlusive Crises (VOC) Stroke
  • Kidney Failure
  • Other Organ Failure
  • Pain Crises
  • Sickle Cell Crisis
  • Death resulting from one of these injuries

What is Sickle Cell Disease?

"In postmarketing clinical trials of Oxbryta, Pfizer reported a higher rate of vaso-occlusive crisis (severe pain caused by sickled red blood cells blocking blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues) in patients with sickle cell disease receiving Oxbryta compared to placebo. There were also more deaths in the Oxbryta treatment group as compared to the placebo group in these postmarketing studies."

Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited disorders that affect hemoglobin, the major protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells. Normally, red blood cells are disc-shaped and flexible so they can move easily through the blood vessels. People with sickle cell disease have red blood cells that are misshaped, typically crescent or “sickle” shaped due to a genetic mutation that affects the hemoglobin molecule. When red blood cells sickle, they do not bend or move easily and can block blood flow to the rest of the body.

Vaso-Occlusive Crisis

Serious problems may come from having sickle cell disease, including sudden onset of strong episodes of pain, called pain crises, that occur because of blocked blood flow and often require medical attention. Other terms used to describe these pain episodes include “sickle cell crisis” and “vaso-occlusive crisis.”

People who have sickle cell disease may also experience other serious health complications, such as chronic pain, stroke, lung problems, eye problems, infections, and kidney disease.

Studies mandated by the FDA, have determined that taking Oxbryta may increase the risk of vaso-occlusive crisis.

Healthcare practitioners have been advised to closely monitor patients who were prescribed Oxbryta and to report serious side effects to the FDA. Patients currently taking Oxbryta should contact their healthcare provider before discontinuing the medication.
