Compensation for Hip Replacement Complications

The last thing you want to hear after a hip replacement surgery is that the replacement part you received may prematurely fail and cause serious pain or other serious injuries and complications. If you or a loved one has experienced hip replacement complications such as infection, swelling, metallosis, hip implant dislocation or other side effects resulting from a metal hip replacement, compensation may be available.

Metallosis and Metal Poisoning – One of the primary complications resulting from hip replacement surgery implants is that friction created by the normal movement of the device can cause the release of microscopic shavings and metal debris into surrounding tissue and blood. This can lead to a condition called metallosis, the build-up of metal debris in the soft tissues of the body, which is characterized by painful inflammatory reactions in body tissue and a high blood-metal count.

Hip Implant Failure – Tens of thousands of patients who received metal hip implants each year may suffer debilitating tissue and muscle damage, extreme pain after hip replacement surgery, and the premature failure of their hip replacement implants. As a result, these hip replacement patients often have had to go through  additional, painful, and costly hip revision surgery to remove the defective metal implants and insert new devices.

Complications Associated with Hip Replacement Implants

The following are complications and side effects to watch out for if you have had a hip replacement surgery and suspect that the hip implant may have failed or could be failing

  • Severe pain
  • Swelling of hip, thigh or groin area
  • Dislocation or loosening of the hip replacement implant
  • Earlier than normal failure of the hip replacement implant
  • Fractured hip bone
  • Infection
  • Clicking, popping or grinding in the area of the hip implant
  • Difficulty and pain when walking, standing or carrying weighted objects
  • Metallosis (metal flakes released into the bloodstream causing metal toxicity, pseudotumors, rash, necrosis or cardiac complications)
  • Leg length discrepancy
  • Blood test results that show high levels of chromium and cobalt caused by metal debris
  • Bone loss caused by device loosening
  • Pseudotumors (a mass of inflamed cells that resembles a tumor but is actually collected fluids)
  • Rash, indicating necrosis (cell death around the implant manifesting as a rash and eventually causing the loss of local soft bone and tissue)
  • Osteolysis (wearing down and thinning of bones causing pain in the surrounding tissue and potential bone breakage)
  • Tissue inflammation

A federal jury in Dallas recently ordered Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, DePuy Orthopedics, to pay more than $1 billion in damages to six plaintiffs who were found to have been injured by one of the company's all-metal hip implants.

A hip replacement or hip arthroplasty is surgery to repair an injured diseased hip joint by replacing it with an artificial joint or implant. Most individuals who undergo these surgeries do so as a result of osteoarthritis which leads to hip pain and inflammation. Hip fracture or natural wear-and-tear are also common reasons for a hip replacement surgery.

Over 500,000 patients in the United Stated were implanted with artificial “metal-on-metal” hip implants, also known as all-metal hips, during hip replacement surgery.
